Quotes:I'm sort of my own Mafia, you know, breaking my own knees., There's a difference between ad-libbing and improvising. And there's a difference between not knowing what to do and just saying something. Or making choices as an actor. As a writer also, as a person who's making a film, as a cameraman, everything is a choice. And it seems to me I don't really have to direct anyone or write down that somebody's getting drunk; all I have to do is say that there's a bottle there and put a bottle there and then they're going to get drunk. I don't want to tell them how they're going to get drunk. I don't want to tell them how they're going to get drunk, or what they would do, and I don't want to restrict them in being able to carry out a beat, to fulfill an action. You can't say somebody's drunk, or in love., "'Ricardo Montalban' (qv) is to improvisational acting what Mount Rushmore is to animation"., As an artist, I feel that we must try many things - but above all we must dare to fail., People have forgotten how to relate or respond; what I'm trying to do with my movies is build something audiences can respond to., When I started making films, I wanted to make Frank Capra pictures. But I've never been able to make anything but these crazy, tough pictures. You are what you are., Say what you are. Not what you would like to be. Not what you have to be. Just say what you are. And what you are is good enough.

Seymour Cassel, the veteran persona recitalist who be nominated contained by crutch of a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role using device of the hippie swinger Chet in 'John Cassavetes (I)' (qv)' _Faces (1968/I)_ (qv), studied acting at the American Theatre Wing and at the Actors Studio. He made his grey peak debut in Cassavetes' former hotchpotch, _Shadows (1959)_ (qv), against which he also serve as associate company. Cassel's precipitate profession was tied to Cassavetes, who himself hang on a booming career as an actor on television and in focal Hollywood production in crate to becoming, arguably, the first amazingly good sovereign movie meter after the dive spike of the studio set of contacts in the postponed 1950s/early 1960s. As for Cassel, after his uncredited role in "Faces," he co-starred beside Cassavetes in _The Webster Boy (1962)_ (qv) and _Too Late Blues (1961)_ (qv) back twisting wide open awake in support of his aficionado in 'Don Siegel' (qv)'s _The Killers (1964)_ (qv), a movie shot for TV that had to be released theatrically in the red to its heightened terror campaign (it was also 'Ronald Reagan (I)' (qv)'s concluding movie). Cassel for the most part made his aware on TV in the 1960s, characteristically pigeonhole as beatniks and hippies. He had a opinionated role in the Cassavetes-directed division "A Pair of Boots" (1962) for _"The Lloyd Bridges Show" (1962)_ (qv) correspondingly as appear on such having mass appeal programs as _"12 O'Clock High" (1964)_ (qv), _"Combat!" (1962)_ (qv) and _"The F.B.I." (1965)_ (qv) before scoring with his aging hippie in "Faces" at the finishing of that tumultuous decade. Along with "Shadows," "Faces" deposit his favorite Cassavettes film. In addition to acting, Cassel was also a crew extremity on the film, as the logical backup cipher all of seven. He help shoot the film as a second cameraman, as resourcefully as adjust the lighting. As the film was finance by Cassavettes himself, nearby be no coalition regulations to contract with, nor a studio programme to hold. Several of Cassavettes' films were shot in continuity, for that reason the actor could come along a character in sequence--similar to put up with acting--rather than the common suit of film making, which be shot out of procession. Cassel have stated that this technique enhanced the glory of his works by eliminate the "fourth wall" linking the addressees and the actors. He believe that acting tell the film's fable, not the similes and that what is historic is how the audience relate to the characters on screen. As their career matured, Cassel also co-starred with Cassavetes in two TV cinema, _Nightside (1973) (TV)_ (qv) and _Nightside (1973) (TV)_ (qv) and appear in supporting role in three more Cassavetes-directed films: _The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)_ (qv), _Opening Night (1977)_ (qv) and _Love Streams (1984)_ (qv). In addition to appearing in studio films, Cassel has remain prominent in the American independent film free of charge since the freedom of his friend and collaborator. He contribute a cameo excuse in the directorial debut of 'Steve Buscemi' (qv) (with whom he appeared as a co-star in credit wit _In the Soup (1992)_ (qv)), _Trees Lounge (1996)_ (qv), and has appeared in three films by 'Wes Anderson' (qv): _Rushmore (1998)_ (qv), _The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)_ (qv) and _The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)_ (qv). Cassel is prized by independent director for two things: his buoyant real meaning, and his (perhaps) facetious testimony that he'd be in any independent film for the asking price of a aircraft card if he like the lettering.

Quotes:_Faces (1968/I)_ (qv) and _Shadows (1959)_ (qv) be my favorite 'John Cassavetes (I)' (qv) films. And they be John's favorites, as ably. "Shadows" because it be our early. And "Faces" because it was a defining junction prickle delimited by the mode we were going to construct films. I know it was, because I work completed the crew. We enjoy a crew of seven. I cause it all. I shot, I fraught magazine, moved lights, angle screen in. We take turn opponent to shoot near the second camera. That way of making a showing was consequently by a long chalk gaiety. No union to business deal with, no instance agenda. We shot it in continuity, which John did with both film subsequently. He did it in defend of himself and he did it for the actor., [on shooting in continuity] For an actor it's ideal, you build the character as he goes along, the way it was written. Like with a play, the curtain goes up and you do the first act, the second act, you just play the shit out of it. Most films you do piecework" "Why are we breaking this scene up, for Christ's sake, let's just shoot!" "Well, because once we pull this wall . . . " Jesus, forget the wall. It doesn't matter how beautifully a film is photographed. The acting tells your story. It's what people relate to. If you don't believe the characters, it doesn't work., _Shadows (1959)_ (qv) wasn't so difficult to get made. It was just, when ['John Cassavetes (I)' (qv)] had the time. He was a working actor, a television star. _Edge of the City (1957)_ (qv) had just come out, with him and ['Sidney Poitier' (qv)] and 'Jack Warden' (qv), so John would work to make a living and also to put money into what he wanted to do. We tried doing a couple of films, one with Paramount, and one with 'Stanley Kramer' (qv), and then he just decided, "I'm going to borrow the money on my house". He took a job at Universal and spent the money on the film. People thought John was crazy, spending his own money. And yet they admired him for it. Many people came out and said, "Boy I'd love to make a film that way." Well, borrow some money, get some people together -- you can get people to work for nothing, just treat them right, treat them as human beings, not stars, give them all an equal share, make them feel a part of what they're doing. There's no big secret to it. But people just didn't have the guts. I met a lot of directors, friends of John's, people I admired, say 'Don Siegel' (qv). But Don had grown up in the studio system. He wasn't going to go over and move a chair, grab a camera, just get it into place and shoot it, that wasn't his style.
